Columbus Middle School

This project was composed of 7 different buildings making up the school complex. Students had previsouly attended two seperate schools in Columbus but when school-district re-organization combined grades six through eight, the school board and administration determined that renovating the existing building woudl be too costly. The clearspan project comprises seven buildings radiating from the rotunda hub: a gym/cafeteria, seperate wings for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, a band hall and a library. The roof consists of standing seam BattenLock roof system and a brick veneer covers most of the facility's exterior walls.

Somerset Junior High School

Located in the countries of Bexar and Atascosa, Somerset Junior High School houses seventh and eighth graders. Unconventional items became a part of the conventional building including tapering columns from base to top from connection to the outside instead of to the inside as more typical; varying the uses of clerestories for windows to allow light into the major corridors; using exposed frames for the canopies; and using the insulated metal panels alone for the school's exterior walls. The natural height of the metal building frame and the addition of clerestory windows and windows at the beginning and ends of every hallway create a bright and welcoming feel throughout the building.
